The classic red lipstick is capable of transforming any makeup and goes very well on several occasions, making any look more powerful and sophisticated at the same time. However, in order for red lipstick (and any other color) to look flawless on your lips, you need to follow some precautions to keep your skin looking healthy and even make it easier to apply the lipstick perfectly.
Dr. Juliana Farias, a Dermatologist and Trichologist, points out that hydration is the first fundamental step in keeping lips healthy: “It’s important to drink a good amount of water daily and apply lip moisturizer regularly. Furthermore, it’s crucial to use lip sunscreen to protect the lips from UV damage.”
If you already have dry and cracked lips, Farias recommends applying more powerful lip moisturizers, with formulas with active ingredients that enhance skin protection. She warns that vitamin deficiencies can also cause dry and cracked lips, so it is important to maintain a balanced diet.
Moisturizers with formulas rich in vitamin E, panthenol, cocoa butter and Shea butter are the most recommended, as these active ingredients are known for their moisturizing and nourishing properties, helping to keep lips soft and healthy.
Once a week, it’s also worth gently exfoliating your lips with a product suitable for the area, in order to remove dead skin and stimulate lip renewal. “We should take care of all our skin, and the lips are no exception. Since they are covered in thin and delicate skin, they require special care. Lip exfoliation can be done once a day, three to four times a week, using products found in pharmacies or homemade methods such as coconut oil and coconut sugar, which gently exfoliate and moisturize the lips,” explains the specialist.
Although we have countless options for finishes, shapes and shades of red lipstick, did you know that this color has been famous since Mesopotamia? That’s right, 6500 BC the ancient Sumerians painted their lips by mixing different ingredients. Years later, in ancient Egypt, men and women also created their own mixtures with red ochre, carmine, wax or fat. Red lipstick in the classic format we know only came about in 1880, through the Parisian brand Guerlain, which had a formula made from grapefruit mixed with butter and wax.

– Choose a lipstick with a quality formula that does not crease or run. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but look for trusted brands (the beauty market offers incredible brands at great prices).
– Before applying red lipstick, it is important to ensure that your lips are soft and moisturized.
– Don’t apply lipstick directly to your lips. Before applying your chosen lipstick, outline your lips with a red lip pencil in the same shade or close to the lipstick.
– When wearing red lipstick, prepare your skin thoroughly. Use foundation, concealer, contour, mascara and blush.
– Red lipstick tends to fade more easily than other colors, so it’s important to do touch-ups throughout the day or night. Keep the lipstick and a compact mirror in your bag to reapply when necessary. Remember to remove any residue before reapplying for a flawless finish.
